The Pollyanna Report: The Bright Side of Losing A Job

Getting fired or laid off can seem like the worst thing that could possibly happen. Feelings of shock, anger, and sheer-utter-terror can come in the aftermath of losing your livelihood. Not only has your source of income fallen by the wayside, but for many, so does your sense of identity.

You might not see it right now, but everything has a silver lining. Being jobless can be a good experience. In fact, being positive about it is going to keep you in the right frame of mind to become even more successful in your next adventure. Here are some reasons why:

It’s a great reason to relax. Enjoy not having to get up at the crack of dark for a while. You can give yourself a much needed break, refresh, rejuvenate, and get your bearings.

You get to re-evaluate your life and priorities. Most of us are so busy that we don’t take the time to stop and look at what our life is like. Are we happy and fulfilled? You have extra time right now to figure it out. You have a lot more experience and knowledge than you did when you took your last job, so maybe your priorities have changed. Now is a good time to adjust your goals.

Change is great for creativity. Sometimes when we get stagnant, we need a good swift kick in the pants to get us moving again. Change can be scary and uncomfortable, but at least something is happening! When our world gets turned upside down, it gives us an opportunity to see things from a different perspective.

You can try something new. A 2013 Gallup study shows that 70% of Americans don’t like their jobs. If you fall into that category, then losing your job might have been the best thing that ever happened to you. You can decide to try a new career path, and you are blessed in that you have nothing to lose.

Most people are just getting by and surviving. In the “failure” of getting let go, you have an opportunity to do so much more than that. You can find a career path that is engaging and more in line with your life’s purpose.
